RefWorks Transition Guide

Welcome to the RefWorks Transition guide! This brief guide will discuss the soft transition from Legacy RefWorks to New RefWorks. In the subsequent boxes, you will find information on what is going on, what to do as a current account holder, and what to do if you are a new user.

What is going on?

At this time, ProQuest is transitioning its RefWorks tool from Legacy to New RefWorks. New RefWorks will function similarly to Legacy RefWorks, as a Reference citation manager, with improvements and new features. 

Georgetown's  transition will occur on June 5th 2017, allowing users to simultaneously run Legacy RefWorks while getting used to the features New RefWorks has to offer. A second transition is likely to occur sometime in early 2018 moving all users to New RefWorks. 

What to do if you have an account

At this time, we have implemented the soft migration from Legacy RefWorks to New RefWorks. In your Legacy accounts, you will see a message above the RefWorks logo that states "Move to Newest version of RefWorks from ProQuest". However, many users have reported issues with using that link to migrate their citations. In order to migrate your Legacy references into your New RefWorks account, we recommend you do the following:

  • Register for a New RefWorks account via following the directions in the section labeled "What to do if you don't have an account"
  • Within your account, above your references, you will see a "+" icon, which will allow you to add or import references
  • Use the + icon to import
  • From the "import" page, you will have the option to import from RefWorks, select RefWorks
  • You will see a message that states "You will need to login and authenticate with RefWorks so we can import your documents". Select "Authorize" underneath the message to begin the process
  •  Then, sign into whichever Legacy account you wish to migrate
  • It will redirect you back to your New RefWorks account and let you know that it is processing your information. 

You can have an account for both Legacy RefWorks and New RefWorks and use them in tandem. If you add more information to your Legacy RefWorks account, you will need to migrate again into New RefWorks to add the new information as it won't automatically be included. This can be done as often as needed.

Also keep in mind that while you can have both Write N Cite and RefWorks Citation Manager installed on your PC at the same time, you won't be able to use them simultaneously. If you have an ongoing project that was started in Legacy RefWorks and Write N Cite, it is recommended that you continue to use Legacy RefWorks and Write N Cite until the project is complete. If you have a new project, it is recommended that you utilize New RefWorks and install RefWorks Citation Manager instead. 

What to do if you don't already have an account

Similar to how users can create new accounts in Legacy RefWorks, New RefWorks users will be able to create a new account from either on or off campus. Connect through DML's website, dml.georgetown.edu, click on "Core Databases", and follow the instructions provided.
