A guide to virtual reality use in health care and medicine.

Oculus Rift

 

DML has two Oculus Rift headsets, Touch controllers, high powered laptops  and the following software available for use by anyone within the GUMC community.

  • 3D Organon VR Anatomy - Over 4,000 anatomical structures and organs are available to hold and examine
     
  • Embodied Labs - simulate tasks and interact with virtual family members and health care providers as a patient experiencing:
    • ​Hearing Loss and Macular Degeneration - Embody Alfred, a 74-year old man with macular degeneration and high frequency hearing loss, as he spends time with family, visits the doctor, and receives a diagnosis.
    • Alzheimers - Embody Beatriz, a middle-aged woman, as she progresses through early, middle, and late stage Alzheimer’s Disease. (AD).
    • End of Life - Embody Clay Crowder, a 66-year old veteran with stage IV, incurable lung cancer.
    • Lewy-Body Dementia/Parkinsons -Embody Dima, an immigrant living with symptoms of both Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson’s disease as she transitions from receiving care at home to care in a residential community.
    • Trans Health and LGBT Aging - Embody Eden and explore the unique challenges of identifying as an older adult from the LGBT community, with a special focus on trans health.

To reserve Oculus Rift

  • Email the Information Services Department at dmlcirculation@georgetown.edu to place a request.
  • Reservations can be made between 9am- 6pm M-F and availability is dependent on library staffing. 
  • There is a 2-hour time limit per reservation.
  • Due to limited space and equipment, reservations are available to no more than two users at a time.

 

VR Headsets

GUMC affiliates can borrow any of the following virtual reality headsets from DML for one week.   Please ask at the Information Services Desk if you're interested.

The Gear, Freefly and Merge all require the use of your smart phone. (DML does not lend smart phones)

 

Google Glass

Google Glass headsets are available for use by GUMC Affiliates.   Please contact the Information Services Department at dmlcirculation@georgetown.edu if interested.
