Lean Library is a browser extension and browser called Academic Browser used to simplify access to DML full text resources and avoid unnecessary paywalls. Lean Library also provides announcements for upcoming DML workshops and resource updates.
The extension redirects to DML subscriptions, legal, open access content or facilitates Document Delivery requests for materials not available.
In order to download, go to the Lean Library download page. Lean Library is available for all major browsers. The Lean Library download page automatically detects the browser the computer is using.
After adding the extension, select Georgetown University Medical Center from the "select your library" menu. When finished select Save at the bottom of the app.
In the advanced settings option which is under notifications, users have different personal preference options. Check or uncheck options under Preferences or Notify me.
Lean Library facilitates access to full text when research is started from a site other than a DML portal. When starting a search directly from Google, PubMed, or a publisher's site, Lean Library will help access full text content without needing to pay or jump through numerous authentication processes.
In the example below, notice that there is no full text available for the article as the user has accessed the ScienceDirect platform directly and not authenticated via the DML website. The Lean Library extension has provided a pop up message stating that DML has access to the content. Select Login with GU NetID in order to authenticate with NetID and password.
When authenticating, another Lean Library message will appear stating that content is now available and brought to you by DML.
Once authentication is complete, users will have access to the full text of the article.
